World Expeditions – Alternative Routes To Favourite Classics

By Patrick Griffin on October 13, 2010

Arctic Polar BearIf you are interested in some of the world’s top classic travel experiences but don’t want to do it the way everyone else does it then World Expeditions has some alternative suggestions.

Inca Rivers Trek (16 days)
This itinerary offers an alternate isolated route and a rarely seen view of Machu Picchu – there are no crowds on this trek at all.

The route follows a remote mountain traverse between two sacred Inca rivers – the Apurimac to the west and the Urubamba to the east – which are the main tributaries of the Amazon.

Between these rivers lies the great Vilcabamba Mountain Range, the last stronghold of the Inca Empire. Unique to this area is the recently cleared and spectacular ‘lost’ ruins of Choquequirau: built by the Incas in the 15th century, like Machu Picchu, it became lost in high jungle which engulfed the ruins until being rediscovered in the early 20th century.

The trek continues to the Inca site at Paltallacta, which provides a stunning and rarely seen view of Machu Picchu.
Price: £1,790 per person
Next departures: 7 April, 5 May, 9 June 2011

Great Wall Trek (10 days)
You stay in the fields of local villagers, on specifically chosen locations where you can see the Wall from the campsite, offering views of the wall in fading and rising sunlight.

This innovative itinerary takes in a remote section of the Great Wall outside Beijing in Hebei Province.

Hosted by local families, you will camp in comfort in exclusive locations and explore the Great Wall trekking between villages.

The scenery is vast and diverse, through tall swaying corn cropped field to distant green river valleys.

Next departures: 21 October 2010, 12 May 2011
Price: £1,250 per person

Kilimanjaro – Shira Route (10 days)
Most trekkers heading to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro opt for the most popular Machame or Marangu routes – but if you are keen to explore less trodden trails, the remote Shira Route is just as stunning.

From the forest and moorland to the caldera of Shira volcano, you will explore the fascinating rock formations on the Shira plateau before traversing beneath the southern ice fields of Kibo.

Enjoy stunning early morning views of Kibo and spent time in the rarely visited Lent Hills, a highlight before you join the main route to the summit of Uhuru Peak (5,895m) on the crater rim.

Departs: Every Friday from June to October and December to February
Price: £1,550 per person

NEW FOR 2011 Antarctica Fly/Cruise Option (16 days)
As of 2011, World Expeditions will offer a series of special voyages that will utilise a charter flight, allowing for the trip to either start or end at Port Stanley in the Falklands, shortening its duration to 15 days (as opposed to the usual three weeks).

The fly/cruise option saves time and money (the charter flight is included in the trip rate) without compromising on the Antarctica experience, as it includes the same number of landing days as on regular departures. Shorter South Georgia only itineraries are also available.

Departs: 20 November, 28 December 2011
Prices: from £6,145 per person

For more information visit www.worldexpeditions.co.uk.

Prices quoted above do not include international flights, however these can be arranged on request.
