Lizard Island enjoys tropical year-round temperatures of 27 degrees, so why
not escape this winter to the spectacular Great Barrier Reef to spot some of Australia’s most exciting marine life off Lizard Island.
One of Australia’s iconic Great Barrier Reef resorts, Lizard Island boasts unrivalled dive sites suitable for all levels of diving experience and snorkeling with a myriad of corals, fish, clams and sharks to entertain.
Divers can mix with green sea turtles and giant clownfish, and snorkelers are rewarded for little effort with 100-year-old giant clam gardens just moments from Lizard’s beaches.
Within a 15 mile radius of Lizard Island, guests will find most of the reef and island types characteristic of the entire Great Barrier Reef, including fringing, inner shelf (outer barrier or ribbon) and lagoon reefs.
There are also several types of coral cays plus continental islands, all of which play host to an extraordinary array of marine habitats.
Around this time of year guests can expect to see humpback whales breeching and fin slapping around the island. Many guests are lucky enough to see these displays from Osprey Lodge while enjoying breakfast.
Lizard’s purpose-built dive boat, the MV Serranidae operates half and full day excursions to stunning inner and outer reef dive sites including the Cod Hole.
For noctural pickings, night diving is also available as part of a day/night dive programme. Novices to diving can also take a ‘Discover Scuba Diving’ taster, which includes equipment hire, classroom sessions and one supervised shore dive with a qualified instructor. Minimum age of 14 years and medical conditions apply.
Fishing enthusiasts can charter Fascination III for a day of exhilarating game fishing. Fascination III offers unparalleled opportunities to explore these magnificent waters, not only for fishing but for snorkel and dive charters.
The continental ledge off of Lizard Island is the largest breeding region of giant Black Marlin in the world and fishermen from all over the world travel here every year to experience the greatest in game fishing excitement from September through to October, with this year’s 24th Lizard Island Black Marlin Classic tournament taking place from October 16th to the 23rd.
Lizard Island is also home to one of Australia’s most important reef Research Stations. Owned and run by The Australian Museum, it provides accommodation, boats, diving gear, laboratories and a seawater aquarium system for researchers and student groups.
Guests at Lizard Island resort are encouraged to visit the Research Station to get a better understanding of the delicate underwater world that surrounds them.
It is Australia’s northernmost resort, located 150 miles off the coast of Cairns, on the Great Barrier Reef. Activities include hiring a dinghy with a gourmet picnic and heading to one of 24-white powder sand beaches, diving the world-renowned Cod Hole, snorkelling off the beach, game fishing and spa treatments.
